President’s Address
Welcome to the ACNS virtual meeting for 2020. This year has truly been unlike any other. In January we looked forward to ACNS’s involvement in the first ever Australasian Brain and Psychological Sciences Meeting where we along with the Australasian Society for Experimental Psychology (EPC, www.asep.com.au) and the Australian Chapter of the Organization of Human Brain Mapping (OHBM; www.humanbrainmapping.org) were to hold a combined meeting in order to facilitate collaborations across the disciplines/approaches that make up our thriving societies. As we are all very much aware of now, the Covid-19 pandemic meant we had to postpone this meeting and the impact of this virus has been far reaching across the globe. Nevertheless our society has endeavored to provide great support for our members and despite the challenges of this year we have still made great strides forward. Indeed, planning is underway for next years ABPS currently scheduled for July in Brisbane, we have developed a return to face-to-face testing protocol for human research, and contacted the Universities of Australia and New Zealand to support our discipline and the careers of our members in the face of funding cuts. In addition, our equity and diversity committee undertook a survey of how the pandemic has affected our members and their work, our ECR subcommittee is preparing to undertake a survey on the mental health of our ECR members, and we are now looking to further improve the accessibility of our society and equity across all members of the community. All these projects are geared to improving the society and field generally in our region and we will continue to build on these.
Of course, a highlight of any ACNS meeting is the presentation of our annual awards. This year’s crop is truly remarkable and each year the standard improves. Our field is clearly growing and we as a community are producing great scientists who are undertaking cutting edge research that truly has impact. To Jason, Hinze, Aurina, Nahian I pass on my warmest congratulations and thank them for being such great examples of cognitive neuroscientists.
